Come Together

Brisbane Beach

Brisbane 20th June to June 21st
“Amazing” is the only word that can sum up the past three days in Brisbane.  You cannot help but notice the overwhelmingly friendliness that has greeted us from our Australian hosts.  No matter where and what they are doing the Aussies will stop for a chat or assist you in anyway they can. Obviously the game against the Lions is the top topic for discussion but they are happy to exchange pleasantries about where you live or what do you think about the weather.

First Test at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane
In fact, the Aussies are a little apologetic about the weather as it is so “bitterly cold compared to previous winters”.  Now I would agree that when we arrived on Friday it was a bit of a shock to see greeted by rain, grey skies and 8 degrees.  You could have been easily fooled that you had actually landed back in the UK.  Since then the weather has been beautiful: sunshine, blue sky and 21 degrees.  Not by any stretch of the imagination could that be called “bitterly cold”.  However I now think that bringing 3 beach shorts and 2 beach towels with me was a bit hopeful.
Brisbane is a fantastic city with a population of 2 million. It is a fine blend of modern city skyline with all the large Corporations in town; the old imperial buildings and plenty of green space.  It even has a beach in the middle of the city.  At first glance it would be a great place to live especially with the quality of life in Australia, which is enhanced by the weather even if it’s “bitterly cold”.
The support and sheer numbers of Lions followers has been immense.  The comradeship of the estimated 35000 supporters from all the “home” nations is phenomenal.  The uniqueness and diversity of the British is brilliant.  I’m sure we’re not in Australia as one country (disappointing that we cant sort out playing national anthems between us) but there is no doubt we are certainly supporting one team.
It has been a very heavy couple of days especially having just joined the party straight from 32 hours of travelling since leaving the Bristol last Wednesday.   Everywhere you go there is a just a sea of red.  Countless numbers of Lions supporters wearing the red shirt.  Best of all everyone just seems to be out in Aus to have a great time.   Ricey and I have met so many people.  Everyone is just pleased to be here in this fabulous country and are taking the opportunity to explore.
All smiles even after the game

The first test was an absolute thriller.  The Suncorp stadium was a fitting theatre for the drama that unfolded.  The ground was almost filled to capacity at 54,499 supporters (who was the one who didn’t turn up).  The fact that the Aussies missed two kickable penalties in the final five minutes left the Lions victors by 23-21 and was justice for some very dodgy refereeing decisions (divine intervention from somewhere).  The Lions supporters were absolutely delirious and the partying afterwards I had never seen the like.  It was just epic!  The bars were full of good-natured banter and out of nowhere a Scottish band popped up dressed in full regalia and playing bagpipes.  The whole place was bouncing.
So far, so good.  I’ve still got that bittersweet feeling when I think what could have been.  Ricey is loving it.  His daughter Becky has gifted us tour shirts with our names on the back.   Brisbane has been great.  I have met so many good people, Aussies and Brits, and had a lot of fun. Now the circus is decamping and we are all off to the next stop.  Melbourne!

Pack Up

The departure day is almost upon me.  I still feel a bit weird for reasons I have explained before.  Anyway its time to pack up my bags and leave these shores.  When it comes to actually packing the suitcase I’m not too bad.  I had so much practice when I was travelling around with work.  However, I am absolutely rubbish at narrowing down what I really want to pack.  Caroline would  be forever making me take clothes out of the case as I wanted to cover every potential eventuality.  Even after Caroline’s attempts at reducing the amount of t-shirts and shorts I had packed, you could almost guarantee that half of the stuff still wouldn’t have been worn by the time I came home.  Well it looks like this trip will be no different.  I have basically emptied my wardrobe into the suitcase.  I just don’t know what to expect in terms of climate, occasion etc so I have catered for all occasions.
I am really looking forward to going now and want to thank all the well wishers who have contacted me.  I will miss all my friends and family whilst away.  You have all been fantastic.  Most of all I want to thank my kids, Georgina and Joe, for being great and supporting each other through this really difficult period.  See you all when I return. X

Winter Wonderland

Well!  They’ re finally here! The tickets for the trip of a lifetime have arrived.  I make no apology for mentioning that I’m off to see the British Lions play Australia at rugby.  It has pre-occupied my mind ever since Ricey and I booked the trip back in March.
There aren’t many bigger sporting occasions in the world.  The first test is in Brisbane, then we fly to Melbourne for the second test and then finally onwards to Sydney.  Not only is it a massive sport event, I will be spending time in a wonderful country with so much to see.  If the itinerary allows we really would like to visit the Great Barrier Reef.  I keep being told that we’re visiting during Australia’s winter and will need to wrap up.  But you need to remember Australian winters are as warm as the UK’s summers!

I really feel really lucky and privileged to be going.  You don’t often have the time and the money to be able to do something so fantastic.  At the time of booking the trip I just thought “sod it I have had a tough time over the past two years.  I deserve it!”
However, I do have some demons in my mind.  Both spiritual and everyday.  Now that the departure is ever closer I can’t stop thinking “if only life had been different.  If only life had been kinder”.  The British Lions Tour and travelling to Australia had been on Caroline and my list of “the things we must do before you…”
As we all know events have not been kind.  So you must forgive me for feeling anxious. All kinds of thoughts are swirling around my head.  What might have been?  That it will be the anniversary of Caroline’s passing a week after I return.  Life just continues to be so bitter sweet.
Then there are the kids.   Both of them are due to go on their own holidays whilst I am away.  Georgina will be away for a week leaving Joe home alone for a week. Family and friends have volunteered to keep an eye on him (and my house), which is a big relief.  Even before then though I still got to sort out their travel insurance, travel money and for good measure Joe has his school prom on July 4th.  Joe’s travel insurance may prove troublesome as he will be under 18.
My mind is racing.  I can now hear my friend Matthew saying to me as he has done so many times when we worked together
“Whoa!  Slow down! Cool your jets!  One step at time!”
As ever he’s right!  I know I need to slow up.  I am determined to enjoy my time in Australia.  It’s too good an opportunity to let pass by.  It’s just so hard at times.
After all is said and done I really can’t wait to get on that aeroplane.  I am lucky to be going.  Ricey and I have known each other for years through playing cricket together.  I know he’s really looking forward to it.
So deep breath! Big smile! Just nine todays to go!

Baggy Trousers

Last week Joe finished school.  For any parent its always evokes a strong emotion as you reflect on how they started so small and innocent and now they have grown into a towering lump that grunts at you when you speak to it.  In addition you realize that they have reached another stage in their evolution and in fact it dawns on you that you too have reached another stage in your own life.  When I consider what Joe has gone through over the past 18 months he has been absolutely incredible and his mother would have been so proud of her little boy.  Caroline and Joe were kindred spirits.  He could do no wrong.  Not sure she would have been too proud of him dressing up as Ariel (The Little Mermaid) on his last day but that’s another story.
So all Joe has to do now is complete his A Levels. I say “all he has to do is…” but quite honestly I do not have a clue how well he is doing and what he needs to do to pass.  I do know that the entry level for Falmouth University to do a degree in Film  is BBC.  In my day BBC stood for, and still does, the British Broadcasting Corporation.  To Joe and his generation it stands for British Born Chinese.  I guess that sums up the difference between my generation and Joe’s generation.  Its just all seems to be different and the ‘A’ Level system is just another example.  Back in the day when I was studying I would be frantically cramming everything I have learned into my small and undeveloped brain.  The final pass or fail grades were based on the exams I took at the end of the course.  I would revise for about two months and move through cycles of panic, hysteria and elation – sometimes within minutes of each other.  Whereas, today the students are continually assessed throughout the two years by the production of coursework.  There doesn’t something to be the same panic – at all.  Well that’s what I’m led to believe.  I just can’t get my head around that lack of panic.  Joe just seems to be so laid back about it all it worries me senseless.  I find myself continually nagging him that he should be revising and have his head in his books.  What books?  Its all online now.  But in truth I just don’t know how significant these exams are to the overall mark.  I don’t know if that’s because of my own ignorance or that all parents are in the dark.  My new role now is cheerleader!
Anyway it got me thinking.  I set myself some objectives for the year.  So rather than wait to the end of the year to see if I have passed or failed I should assess my own progress half way through the year.  After all I need to allow time to do any re-sits.  If you beat them, then join them!
Family
1      Help Joe through his A levels
Well time will tell.  Joe has three exams on 4th June and a final one on the 14th.  Results will be made known in the middle of August.  As far as I am concerned it’s all down to Joe and the gods.  I am sure his mother will be pulling all the strings she can.   Fingers are well and truly crossed                                                                 5/10
2      Help Joe decide what he wants to do next whether it is University or something else
Joe has decided he wants to go to Falmouth University to do a degree in Film.  This course will be a perfect for Joe.  Joe loves making films and is very good at it.  Right through to devising the concept to editing and producing it.  I’m sure he will be a huge success especially as part of the course he has to watch three DVDs per week out of a library 22,000.  My money is on that he could watch the lot in the three years. We have been to Greenwich University and the University of Glamorgan but Falmouth was is chosen place. Couldn’t have done much more.  Just got to move him down there in September and ensure he settles in                                           7/10
3      Help Georgina through her first year of University
This didn’t go quite to plan.  Despite Georgina settling into University life at Cardiff way above anyone’s expectations at Christmas Georgina decided she didn’t want to continue with Chemistry and pulled out.  With the help of a few close friends Georgina has responded to this setback very well.  Georgina will be returning to Cardiff University in September to do a Psychology Degree.  Georgina has in the meantime been working at Primark to clear the overdraft she built up over the three months she was at Uni!                                                                                     5/10
Me
4      Watch British Lions in Australia.  Anyone else interested?
Now I might have mentioned this once or twice that I am off to Australia to watch the British Lions play.  Its all booked and my long time cricketing mate Tony Rice is coming with me.  Cant wait.  All there is left to do is enjoy it.                    8/10
5      Three bike rides: 1) across the Outer Hebrides with my brother Andrew; 2) memorial ride from Cardiff to Bristol; 3) one other big ride e.g. London to Paris – maybe!
Completed the memorial bike ride from Cardiff to Bristol, which required incredible endeavor from the 10 who completed it.  The weather was just terrible.  Thanks to the sterling efforts we managed to £600 for St Peters Hospice.
Neil and I planned to ride from Cambridge to Bristol.  However, it started to turn into a logistical nightmare and we couldn’t fix the diaries.  So we abandoned that idea.  Instead we cycled a return trip from Bristol to Gloucester, 80 miles.
There is just one major ride outstanding, the Outer Hebrides.  I will be cycling across these Scottish Isles with my brother Andrew ably supported by his partner Claire and my nephew Harry.  The ride is booked into the diary for August 5th         7/10
6      Maintain my weight at 13 stone

My objectives now start to fall apart.  Since the start of the year my weight has risen considerably.  In January my weight was 85kg with the clear aim of reducing to 83kg.  Half way through the year I have weighed in at 88kg (13stone 12 pounds, 194 pounds).  My only consolation is that Its still along way from where I started from in January 2012 ie 98.5kg (15st 7lb).  My aim now is to get back to 85kg.  I will need to find some time to do more running                                                                      3/10
7      Learn to cook properly
I am still at the basic stage of cooking.  Basically I can read instructions and use the oven.  I would like to get to the point where I did have some idea of why I was doing something and be able to pull together a three-course meal from scratch.  I will be getting onto this after the summer holidays                                                            4/10
Work
8      Work out what to do next regarding my career
At the moment I am enjoying the freelance life especially as I have landed a few clients.  The freedom and life balance it has given me has been very welcomed in the difficult circumstances that we faced as a family. Whether its long term or not depends on future success                                                                                    8/10

Overall 47/80 or 59% - Could do better.

Good luck to Joe love Mum and Dad xx
