New Job

Leaving Cassidian as the CEO and then immediately take up a totally domestic and caring role was a big shock to my system. Since April 9th I have absolutely prioritized my family for the first time in a long time.  Working for a large global corporation whilst rewarding in many ways is also very demanding.  I was very lucky in that Caroline understood the demands, the rewards and most importantly possessed a strong work ethic herself.
Whilst I would never have chosen the circumstances that brought me here I feel hugely privileged to have spent some quality time with Caroline and with my two children over the past 8 months.
However, the time has arrived where I need to return to work.  You can only have so much daytime TV in one life.  As much as I love “Homes Under the Hammer” and “Good Morning” with Holly and Phil, its time to leave them and re-engage with the rest of society.
As every single parent with children at school knows there are many hurdles and considerations that need to be overcome and dealt with.  When looking at the work life triangle, me – family – work, my priority has to be my family.  Georgina although doing very well at Cardiff University still has some settling down to achieve.  Joe is now in his most important year at school and will be doing his A levels in May.  If he works hard then he will have his own settling to do at University next year.  I also have to come to terms with my own circumstances including seeing more of my friends and family.
With these hurdles and considerations in mind for the immediate future would mean any potential role would have to lean more towards a lifestyle choice and probably be on a freelance basis.  The major benefits to this way of working are many. I am able to investigate a variety of opportunities; talk to very different and interesting people; and have to rely on my own skills.  My first step was to set up my company named  “TWU Ltd” as in “This Way Up”.
I have been very fortunate in that I have either been recommended to companies or past colleagues have looked me up.   Without going into too much detail at this point the option that fits my lifestyle balance best at the present time is to join FD Centre (FD as in Finance Director).
FDC have asked me to join them as Regional Director for South Wales, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.  FDC is a service provision company for high caliber financial professionals.  The company is growing rapidly across the country and has a very mature business model.  I have been really impressed by the quality of the management and ethos of the Company.  So all you Cassidian lot, just when you thought it was safe, I will be back across the Severn Bridge.
I am also looking at other business opportunities that will broaden my portfolio but that will come later.  Whether I will be successful at this totally new way of working remains to be seen but I’m going to give it a go!
Thanks to everyone for your support and best wishes.  “Bring it on!

"Thank you"

Tuesday 13th November was a very difficult day.  In traditional Paul Watson manner I thought I would cope and be alright!  I walked into the day with my eyes wide shut. The turning point was the photo I loaded onto Facebook.  It dawned on me when I looked at it that the photo was only just over a year old.  We were on holiday in Mexico and Caroline was on the "up" following treatment with the new "miracle" drug.  The lovely image of Caroline stayed with me all day.
The support from the immediate family and friends once again has been unbelievable.  We all enjoyed a meal to celebrate Caroline's birthday and toasted her.   I would also like to thank everyone for their messages of support. It's been completely overwhelming.
"Thank you".

Chorizo Spanish Stew

Absolutely delicious and easy to make

Ingredients
  • 2 red peppers cored, de-seeded and thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped
  • 600g Charlotte potatoes cut into large chunks
  • 1 x carton tomato passata
  • 2 cloves of garlic and a sprinkle of herbs
  • 300ml (10floz) vegetable stock
  • 1 x 250g cooking Chorizo
  • 20 pitted black olives
  • Chopped parsley, to garnish
  • Crusty bread to serve

Method
Place peppers, onions, potatoes and passata into a large pan.  Add chopped garlic and herbs.  Bring to the boil in the vegetable stock and simmer for 30 minutes. Ensure vegetables are tender.
Slice Chorizo and add to the pan along with the olives.  Continue cooking over a medium heat for 10 minutes.  Garnish with parsley.
Serve hot with crusty bread.

Men In Tights

I make no apology for releasing Joe’s video of our “Bristol – Lands End Cycle Ride”  that we did over Easter 2012.  The seven of us raised the best part of £9500 Just Giving - Cancer Research UK.

So play the video and re-live our memories.  Hope you really enjoy it.  However, if the sight of middle aged men in Lycra is just too much then just turn the music up and dance around the living room or kitchen or anywhere!

Challenging Times!

Tuesday 13th November is yet another difficult milestone that will challenge me, my family and close friends.  As many of you will already know November 13th is Caroline's birthday.  Traditionally Caroline, me and the kids would go out for dinner to a place chosen by whoever's birthday it was. Caroline really enjoyed Bottlelinos so that’s where we will be celebrating.  I am really thankful that so many of our friends and family are going to join us on the day to support us.  The close circle of friends and family has been fantastic and words cannot express how much I appreciate and love these people.  The whole experience has definitely brought us closer.

Carolines birthday also marks a number of emotional milestones for my family  and will hit us in rapid fire.  Following Caroline's birthdays there is Georgina's birthday (7th December) followed quickly by Christmas and then New Years eve.

I've made my mind up that each of these milestones will be dealt with in our own traditional family manner.  To do anything else will mean that we are changing our lives because of Caroline’s passing and in any case whatever we do there will be an “empty chair”.  Most of all Caroline wouldn't have wanted us to do anything different. As she told us all we have to all enjoy ourselves and there should be no tears. She always drove a tough bargain.  If we've got the strength we will even sing happy birthday on 13th November!
